Winter Walks on the South West Coastal Path in Devon

One of the best ways to explore and appreciate Devon by its natural beauty is by walking along the South West Coastal Path, a national trail that stretches for 630 miles along the coastline of Somerset, Devon, Cornwall and Dorset. 

The South West Coastal Path is on the doorstep of all of our Devon holiday parks and offers a variety of walks for all levels of ability and interest. From easy strolls along sandy beaches and harbours, to challenging hikes over rugged cliffs and headlands. No matter what your preference, you will be rewarded with breathtaking views of the sea, the sky, and the landscape.

Winter is a great time to enjoy the South West Coastal Path in Devon, as the crowds are fewer, the air is crisp, and the colours are vibrant. You can also experience the changing seasons, witness the wildlife, and discover the history and culture of the region.

The Wildlife and Forts of Berry Head NNR

If you are a nature lover and a history buff, you will love the walk around the Berry Head National Nature Reserve, a peninsula that juts out into the sea near Brixham. This circular walk is about 1.6 miles long and takes you around the cliffs, the grasslands, and the forts of the reserve 1.

You can start the walk from the Berry Head car park, where you can find a visitor centre, a cafe, and a shop. You will then follow the path along the edge of the cliffs, where you can enjoy spectacular views of the Torbay, the Breakwater, and the lighthouse. You will also have a chance to spot some of the wildlife that inhabits the reserve, such as seabirds, dolphins, seals, and butterflies.

Sutton Harbour to Royal William Yard

If you are in Plymouth, you can take a scenic walk from Sutton Harbour to Royal William Yard, a distance of about 3.7 miles. This walk follows the South West Coastal Path along the waterfront, passing by some of the most iconic landmarks and attractions of the city 1

Woolacombe Down and Morte Point 

An easy walk of 4.5 miles that starts and ends in Woolacombe. You will climb up to Woolacombe Down, where you can admire the panoramic views of the sandy beach and the Atlantic Ocean. You will then follow the coast path to Morte Point, a rocky headland that is home to a variety of wildlife, including seals and birds .

Hartland Quay to Hartland Point

A challenging walk of 6.2 miles that follows the coast path from the historic Hartland Quay to the lighthouse at Hartland Point. You will encounter steep ascents and descents, rugged cliffs and secluded coves. You will also see the remains of shipwrecks and the impressive rock formations known as the Devil’s Cheesewring and Blackpool Mill Mouth
